How it all started

Territories

Clan Sutherland originated in the far northeast of the Scottish Highlands, in the county that still bears its name—Sutherland. Their territory stretched across rugged coastal lands and mountainous terrain, bordered by Caithness to the north and Ross-shire to the south. From the 12th century, the Sutherlands were powerful regional rulers, holding the title of Earls of Sutherland for centuries. Their strategic location and fierce independence made them influential in clan battles and Highland politics throughout medieval Scotland.

Clan Chief

The current chief of Clan Sutherland is Alistair Charles St. Clair Sutherland, 25th Earl of Sutherland. He is recognized as one of the senior Scottish peers and holds a lineage dating back to the early Norman settlers. The historic seat of the clan was Dunrobin Castle, an architectural gem overlooking the Moray Firth. Today, Dunrobin Castle remains a symbol of the clan’s enduring heritage and is one of Scotland’s most iconic stately homes, open to the public and steeped in centuries of Sutherland legacy.

Dunrobin Castle

Location: Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland

Dunrobin Castle, perched on the coast near the village of Golspie in Sutherland, is the ancestral home of Clan Sutherland. With roots stretching back to the early 13th century, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in Scotland, and the largest in the Northern Highlands.

Originally built as a fortified keep during a period of Norse and clan conflict, Dunrobin evolved over centuries into a stately home. The Sutherlands held immense sway in the region as the Earls—and later Dukes—of Sutherland, and their castle symbolized power, resilience, and noble heritage.

In the mid-19th century, Sir Charles Barry, the architect of the Houses of Parliament, was commissioned to transform the castle into a French château-style mansion, complete with conical spires and sweeping gardens overlooking the Moray Firth.

Dunrobin played various roles through time, including as a naval hospital during World War I and a boys' boarding school in the 20th century. Despite suffering fire damage and partial closure, it has since been restored and reopened to the public.

Today, Dunrobin Castle remains a striking symbol of Highland aristocracy and Clan Sutherland's enduring legacy, drawing visitors from around the world to admire its majestic architecture and storied past.
