How it all started
Territories
Clan Ross held dominion in the Easter Ross region of the Scottish Highlands, particularly around the towns of Tain and Fearn. Their influence was strongest during the 13th and 14th centuries, with their lands stretching along the shores of the Dornoch Firth. The clan played a significant role in Highland politics, supporting the Scottish crown during the Wars of Independence and participating in various historic battles. Their proximity to both the coast and the fertile inland made them strategic players in northern Scotland.
Clan Chief
The current chief of Clan Ross is David Campbell Ross, recognized as the 15th Chief of the Clan. The traditional seat of Clan Ross was Balnagown Castle, located in Kildary, Easter Ross. This castle served as the center of clan governance for centuries. Though it passed out of Ross hands in later centuries, Balnagown remains a symbol of the clan's noble past. The modern clan continues to celebrate its heritage through international gatherings and a strong sense of kinship.

Balnagown Castle, located near the village of Kildary in Easter Ross, served as the historic seat of Clan Ross, one of the oldest and most respected Highland clans. With roots tracing back to the 12th century, the Rosses were established landowners and influential figures in northern Scotland.
The Rosses were granted lands in Ross-shire by King Malcolm IV and later earned the title “Earls of Ross,” becoming powerful stewards of the Highlands. Their castle at Balnagown became the center of clan leadership and regional governance.
Over time, Balnagown Castle underwent significant architectural changes, evolving from a medieval stronghold into a more refined country house. It was home to generations of Ross chiefs and played a role in the clan’s participation in various historic conflicts, including the Wars of Scottish Independence.
In the 20th century, the castle changed hands and fell into disrepair, but it was later purchased and carefully restored by Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed. Though not generally open to the public, Balnagown remains a well-preserved private estate surrounded by expansive parkland and gardens.
Balnagown Castle stands as a monument to the strength, endurance, and nobility of Clan Ross—one of the Highland's great families— and its enduring connection to the lands of Easter Ross.
