How it all started

Territories

Clan Robertson, also known as Clan Donnachaidh, hails from the central Highlands of Scotland, particularly in the region of Perthshire. Their early power base was centered around Rannoch and Struan, where they controlled vast areas of rugged highland terrain. The Robertsons were known for their fierce loyalty to the Scottish crown, notably capturing the murderers of King James I in 1437—an act that earned them royal favor and land. Their motto "Virtutis Gloria Merces" (Glory is the reward of valour) reflects their proud warrior tradition.

Clan Chief

The current chief of Clan Robertson is Alexander Gilbert Haldane Robertson of Struan, the 24th Chief of Clan Donnachaidh. He resides in Rannoch, Perthshire, and remains the head of one of the oldest uninterrupted lines of clan chiefs in Scotland. The Clan Donnachaidh Society, based in Pitlochry, plays a vital role in preserving the legacy and genealogical records of this proud Highland clan.

Dunalastair - Clan Robertson History

Dunalastair

Location: Rannoch, Perthshire, Scotland

Dunalastair, nestled in the heart of Rannoch Moor, served as the historic seat of Clan Robertson, also known as Clan Donnachaidh. The area around Dunalastair was the ancestral homeland of the Robertsons, a clan with deep Highland roots and a reputation for loyalty and bravery.

The original castle, Dunalastair House, was built in the 17th century and was later replaced by a grander mansion in the 19th century. Though now a romantic ruin, the estate was once the center of clan life, surrounded by rugged Highland scenery and steeped in history.

Clan Robertson earned royal recognition in 1437 when they captured the murderers of King James I. In gratitude, the crown granted them more land and the clan motto: "Virtutis Gloria Merces" – "Glory is the reward of valour."

While Dunalastair House fell into disuse in the 20th century, its ruins remain a symbol of the enduring heritage of Clan Robertson. The nearby countryside continues to draw visitors interested in the clan’s legacy, offering a quiet yet powerful connection to Scotland’s storied past.

Dunalastair represents not just a home, but a spiritual heartland for Clan Donnachaidh, where history, landscape, and identity are forever intertwined.
