About the MacAulay Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacAulay – 1880 as a Clan/Family tartan and describes it as the standard clan tartan. The Register notes that it was first published by M'Intyre North in the 1881 Book of the Club of True Highlanders and that an 1880 Clans Originaux sample shows it was already in production before that publication.

Clan history describes Clan MacAulay, or the MacAulays of Ardincaple, as first recorded in Dunbartonshire in the 1600s and notes the modern Clan MacAulay Association's rebirth in 1998. The same page gives the motto Dulce Periculum, meaning Danger is Sweet.

MacAulay Tartan Pattern & Colours

MacAulay tartan has a vivid red-and-blue character, structured by green, black and light accents. It brings strong colour to tartan clothing, scarves and accessories while still feeling anchored in a recognized clan sett.

MacAulay Heritage

Clan history notes that the modern association brought together MacAulays from Ardincaple, Lochbroom, the Hebrides and Northern Ireland. That wider geography is useful for collection copy because MacAulay is not a single simple place story.

The SRT record gives the tartan a strong documentary base: an 1880 sample, an 1881 publication and standard clan-tartan status. This makes MacAulay a good candidate for content that is both colourful and source-specific.
