About the Clephane Tartan

The Clephane name — also Clephan — is an old Lowland Scottish one of Anglo-Norman roots, recorded in Scotland from the early 13th century. Alanus de Clephane was Sheriff of Lauderdale and a witness to a donation to Kelso Abbey around 1203; his son Walter gained the barony of Carslogie in Fife through marriage, and there the family was seated for centuries. An old armigerous family rather than a chiefed clan, the Clephanes are most fittingly worn with the Fife District tartan of their home county.

This collection celebrates the Clephane and Clephan name and its long Fife heritage, bringing a fitting district tartan into apparel, accessories, home decor and heritage gifts for those who carry the name or trace their line to Carslogie and the country around Cupar.

Clephane & Fife District Colours

Worn through the Fife District tartan, the collection draws on a dignified palette of red and green with black and white — warm, earthy colours of the old Kingdom of Fife, fitting for a family seated for so long at Carslogie, whose arms bore a red lion rampant on silver.

Clephane Family Heritage

From their first settlement in Lauderdale as vassals of the Morvilles, the Clephanes rose to hold the barony of Carslogie near Cupar in Fife, which they kept through the reigns of the Bruce and beyond. The family's most famous treasure was the Iron Hand of Carslogie — a finely wrought iron prosthetic hand, made for a Clephane laird who lost his own in battle, long preserved as a relic of the family along with the Douglas Clephane Horn.

The Clephanes were soldiers and sheriffs through the centuries: William Clephane rose to major in a Scots-Dutch regiment and came out for the Jacobites at Sheriffmuir in 1715. In time the line passed through heiresses, the last carrying the name into the family of MacLean-Clephane of Torloisk, and thence by marriage towards the Marquesses of Northampton. The crest is a hand holding a helmet, and the motto Ut Sim Paratior means "that I may be the readier."
