Grainger Family Heritage
The name comes from an office of trust: the granger, in Latin granatarius, "manager of the victual," kept the grange — the farm and granary — of a lord or a monastery, and oversaw the gathering and storing of the grain. Gocelin, brother of Hugh Granger, witnessed a grant to the monks of Paisley around 1189, and Robert de la Graunge of Roxburghshire rendered homage in 1296.
In 1299 Robert, the granatorius of Holyrood Abbey, took an oath of loyalty, and John Graneter served as a juror at Inverness in 1430, showing the name spread across Scotland wherever there were abbey granges to keep. From these keepers of the harvest the name has carried down the centuries; among its modern bearers is Dame Katherine Grainger, one of Scotland's greatest Olympic athletes.
