About the Ferguson Tartan

Clan Ferguson — also Fergusson — is one of the most widespread of Scottish clans, the "Sons of Fergus," from the Gaelic MacFhearghuis. Its many branches spread across Argyll, Ayrshire, Perthshire and the north-east, with the Argyll line claiming descent from Fergus Mor mac Erc, the king who led the Scots from Ireland to found the kingdom of Dalriada. A clan with its own chief, Fergusson of Kilkerran, the Fergusons have a rich array of their own tartans.

Whether you bear the Ferguson or Fergusson name, descend from Argyll, Ayrshire or Perthshire, or simply admire a great clan of ancient royal roots, this collection brings the Ferguson tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Ferguson Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Ferguson tartan is a handsome sett of deep blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red and white — cool, dignified colours worn by the Sons of Fergus across Scotland. Regional variations such as the Atholl and Balquhidder setts offer further choice to those of the name.

Ferguson Clan Heritage

The name means simply "son of Fergus," a favourite name among the Gaels who crossed from Ulster to Argyll, and the clan's branches trace to more than one great Fergus — the kings of Dalriada in Argyll, and Fergus, Lord of Galloway, in the south-west, founder of Dundrennan Abbey. From an early date Fergusons all across Scotland looked to the house of Kilkerran in Ayrshire as their chief, and their heraldry of three boars' heads and a buckle was uniform from the earliest times.

The Fergussons of Kilkerran gave Scotland judges and baronets, and other branches — Craigdarroch, Dunfallandy, Raith and Pitfour — their own share of soldiers and statesmen. The name shines brightest in peace: the poet Robert Fergusson, admired by Robert Burns; the philosopher Adam Ferguson, a father of sociology; and Patrick Ferguson, inventor of the breech-loading rifle. The crest is a bee on a thistle, and the motto Dulcius ex Asperis.
