How it all started

Territories

Clan MacKinnon is an ancient Highland clan believed to descend from the royal line of the early Scottish kings of Dál Riata. Traditionally, the MacKinnons were associated with the Inner Hebrides, especially the islands of Mull and Skye. They held lands in Strathaird on Skye and Mishnish on Mull, where they served as hereditary abbots and fierce warriors during clan conflicts and Jacobite uprisings. As part of the Clan Alpin group, the MacKinnons proudly claimed descent from Alpin, father of Kenneth MacAlpin—the first King of Scots. Despite their small size compared to other Highland clans, the MacKinnons played a meaningful role in Scottish history and maintained their cultural influence across the Hebrides.

Clan Chief

Clan MacKinnon is currently considered armigerous, as it lacks a chief recognized by the Court of the Lord Lyon. Nonetheless, MacKinnon descendants around the world continue to celebrate their heritage through clan societies and cultural gatherings. The clan crest—a boar’s head erased—and the motto “Audentes fortuna juvat” (Fortune favors the bold) reflect their bravery and determined spirit. The MacKinnon tartan, distinguished by deep greens and blues with bold red accents, remains a proud symbol for those honoring their island ancestry.
