About the MacKinlay Family Tartan

The MacKinlay name comes from the Gaelic Mac Fhionnlaigh, meaning "son of Finlay." The MacKinlays of the Lennox are a recognised sept of Clan Buchanan, descended from a Finlay who was a cadet of Buchanan of Drumikill. As a sept name rather than a clan with its own chief, MacKinlay is most fittingly worn with the Buchanan tartan.

Clan Buchanan, of which the MacKinlays are a sept, carries the motto Clarior Hinc Honos, "brighter hence the honour." This collection brings the Buchanan tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts for the MacKinlay family.

MacKinlay Tartan Pattern and Colours

Worn with the Buchanan tartan, this collection draws on a bright and handsome ground of green and red crossed with yellow, black and white — one of the most colourful of all setts, fitting for the MacKinlays of the Lennox and their Buchanan kin.

MacKinlay Heritage

The MacKinlays were long at home in the Lennox, the country about Loch Lomond, and the oldest account of them, by Buchanan of Auchmar in 1723, traces the chief sept of the Lennox MacKinlays to Finlay, a son of Buchanan of Drumikill. Others of the name in the same country were reckoned MacFarlanes, showing how closely the Lennox families were bound together.

Like many Lennox families, a great number of MacKinlays went over to Ulster in the plantations of the 17th century, and from there many crossed to America. Among their descendants was William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States. Wherever it is found, the MacKinlay name keeps its old link to the Lennox and to Clan Buchanan.
