MacGregor Tartans

5 variations

The MacGregor tartan features a distinctive and historically rich color palette. The most iconic version, known as the MacGregor Red and Green tartan, highlights a bold blend of red, green, and white—symbolizing the fiery spirit, resilience, and purity of the MacGregor clan.

Another well-known and widely recognized pattern is the Rob Roy MacGregor Tartan, which consists of a striking two-color scheme of red and black. This simple yet powerful design became legendary through the stories of the famous outlaw and folk hero, Rob Roy MacGregor.

In addition to these core styles, MacGregor tartans are available in a variety of traditional and functional forms:

  • MacGregor Ancient Tartan – Uses softer, more weathered tones for a vintage, timeworn look.
  • MacGregor Modern Tartan – Offers a high-contrast, vivid alternative for contemporary wearers.
  • MacGregor Hunting Ancient Tartan – A subdued, rustic version ideal for field and outdoor use, often incorporating earthy tones like brown and orange.
  • MacGregor Hastie Tartan – A lesser-known but distinctive variant tied to the MacGregor name through the Hastie sept.

With its wide range of styles and rich symbolic colors, the MacGregor tartan allows every member of the clan to wear their heritage with pride—whether through the boldness of red and black, the balance of green and white, or the natural warmth of the hunting variations.

How it all started

Territories

Clan MacGregor held ancestral lands in Glenstrae, Glenlochy, and later Balquhidder in the central Highlands of Scotland. Despite being one of the oldest Highland clans, with lineage tracing back to the early Celtic kings of Dál Riata, they suffered centuries of persecution. Due to conflicts with rival clans—especially Clan Campbell—and political turmoil, their lands were repeatedly seized and their name was legally proscribed in the 17th century. Nevertheless, the MacGregors adapted and endured, maintaining their identity through strength, courage, and kinship.

Clan Chief

The current chief of Clan MacGregor is Sir Malcolm MacGregor of MacGregor, 7th Baronet and 24th Chief. While the clan never had a permanent castle seat due to displacement, Balquhidder and Glenstrae remain symbolic homelands for the MacGregors. Perhaps the most famous MacGregor is Rob Roy, a Jacobite fighter and folk hero who became a symbol of Highland resistance and pride. Today, the MacGregor name—once outlawed—is celebrated globally, representing resilience, heritage, and a legacy that no law could erase.

Glenstrae and Balquhidder

Location: Central Highlands, Scotland

Clan MacGregor is one of the most storied and resilient clans in Scottish history, famed for their motto "'S Rioghal Mo Dhream" (My Race is Royal). Their ancestral lands were centered in Glenstrae, Glenlochy, and later Balquhidder in the Central Highlands, though their territory often shifted due to persecution and displacement.

The MacGregors claim descent from the ancient Celtic kings of Dál Riata, and their lineage gave rise to fierce pride and independent spirit. However, political enmity—particularly with Clan Campbell—led to their proscription in the early 17th century, during which time they were forbidden to use their own name. Despite this, they continued to fight for their heritage and survive under alias surnames.

The clan is famously associated with Rob Roy MacGregor, the 18th-century outlaw and folk hero whose exploits earned him legendary status in Highland lore. He defended his clan's honor and livelihood during an era of hardship and injustice.

Although they lacked a permanent castle seat due to their displacement, Balquhidder served as a spiritual and cultural home for the MacGregors. Today, monuments and gravestones in the area commemorate the clan's indomitable legacy.

Clan MacGregor has since regained full legal recognition and continues to thrive through global gatherings, cultural preservation, and the proud remembrance of a name once banned but never broken.
