Explore the history of Clan MacFarlane

How it all started

Territories

Clan MacFarlane descends from Parlan (Bartholomew), a younger son of the ancient Earls of Lennox, establishing its roots in the lands of Arrochar, at the head of Loch Long in western Scotland. As one of the Highland clans, the MacFarlanes played a crucial role in defending their territory and were renowned for their nighttime raids, known as "creachs," which earned them a fierce reputation. The rugged lands around Loch Lomond and the Arrochar Alps remained their stronghold for centuries, giving them strategic control and a deep connection to Highland traditions. Although the clan lost its ancestral lands in the 18th century, the MacFarlane name continues to be celebrated for its proud heritage and spirited resilience.

Clan Chief

Clan MacFarlane is currently armigerous, meaning it has no recognized chief under Scottish heraldic law. However, the clan remains active through global societies that uphold its legacy and promote cultural heritage. The clan crest—a demi-savage holding a sheaf of arrows—and the motto “This I'll defend” reflect the clan’s readiness to protect its people and honor. MacFarlane tartan, recognized by its bold dark tones, continues to symbolize pride among descendants worldwide who gather to celebrate their ancestry and Highland identity.
