About the Lyon Tartan
Clan Lyon is a Scottish clan seated at the famous Glamis Castle in Angus. By tradition the Lyons sprang from a younger son of the Lamonts of Cowal — the "white lion on blue" of their arms being a reversal of the Lamont colours — though some trace them to a Norman family, the de Léons. Lyon Clan Heritage
Sir John Lyon, known as the "White Lyon," was granted the thanage of Glamis by Robert II about 1372, and married the king's daughter, Princess Jean Stewart, becoming Chamberlain of Scotland — but he was slain in a quarrel with Sir James Lindsay of Crawford. His descendants were made Lords Glamis in 1445, and rose to be Earls of Kinghorne in 1606 and Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne in 1677, enlarging the great castle of Glamis.
The family's story had its tragedies, none darker than the burning of Janet Douglas, Lady Glamis, on a false charge of witchcraft in 1537. The Lyons followed the Covenant and later the Jacobite cause, and the Old Pretender was entertained at Glamis in 1716. In the 20th century the house gave the nation a beloved queen: Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, daughter of the 14th Earl, who became Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The crest is a lady holding a thistle, the motto In Te Domine Speravi.
