About the Lockhart Tartan

Clan Lockhart is an old Lowland clan of Lanarkshire, of Norman origin, whose name was first Locard. Long seated at the Lee, near Lanark, the Lockharts were among the most prominent families of the medieval Lowlands. Their very name and arms — a heart within a lock — commemorate their most famous deed: the bearing of the heart of Robert the Bruce toward the Holy Land. A clan with its own chief, the Lockhart of the Lee, and its own tartan.

Whether you bear the Lockhart name, descend from Lanarkshire, or simply admire a clan of romance and legend, this collection brings the Lockhart tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Lockhart Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Lockhart tartan is a handsome sett of deep red and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — warm, dignified colours fitting for a clan whose emblem is a heart, and whose story is bound to the last wish of Scotland's greatest king.

Lockhart Clan Heritage

Sir Symon Locard of the Lee fought for Robert the Bruce and was knighted for his service. When the dying king asked that his heart be carried on crusade to the Holy Land, it was Sir Symon who bore the key to the silver casket in which it was kept, riding with Good Sir James Douglas. In Spain, Douglas fell fighting the Moors, and Sir Symon recovered the casket and brought the king's heart safely home to Melrose Abbey.

To honour the deed, the family changed its name from Locard to Lockheart, later Lockhart, and set a heart within a fetterlock in its arms, with the motto Corda Serrata Pando. From the crusade Sir Symon is said to have brought home the Lee Penny, a healing amulet set in a coin, whose fame inspired Sir Walter Scott's novel The Talisman. The chiefs, the Lockharts of the Lee, hold their lands in Lanarkshire still.
