How it all started

Territories

Clan Lindsay is a distinguished Lowland Scottish clan of Anglo-Norman origin, with the name deriving from lands in Lincolnshire, England. The family came to Scotland during the reign of David I in the 12th century and quickly rose in power and influence. The Lindsays were granted large estates in Lanarkshire, Fife, and Angus, and became one of the most prominent noble families in medieval Scotland. Their principal seat was Edzell Castle in Angus, and they were later elevated to Earls of Crawford, a title that brought the clan considerable prestige. Known for their loyalty to the Scottish Crown, the Lindsays were influential in both political and military affairs throughout Scottish history.

Clan Chief

The current Chief of Clan Lindsay is the Rt. Hon. Alexander Patrick Greysteil Ruthven Lindsay, 29th Earl of Crawford and 12th Earl of Balcarres. As Premier Earl of Scotland, he holds one of the highest-ranking noble titles in the Scottish peerage. The clan crest—a swan rising from a coronet—and the motto “Endure fort” (Endure with strength) reflect the dignity, resilience, and noble heritage of the clan. Clan Lindsay societies today work to preserve this remarkable legacy, connecting members across the globe through shared ancestry and cultural celebration.
