About the Leask Tartan
Clan Leask is an old Scottish clan of the north-east, taking its name from the lands of Leask — now Pitlurg — in the parish of Slains in Aberdeenshire. William de Laskereske rendered homage to Edward I in 1296, and David II granted a charter of the Leask lands in the 14th century. A clan with its own chief, the Leask of Leask, and its own tartan, the Leasks carry the motto Virtute Cresco.

Leask Clan Heritage
In 1380 William of Lask, Lord of that Ilk, granted a pound of wax yearly to the Church of St Mary at Ellon, and the family held their Aberdeenshire lands of that Ilk for generations. In the mid-15th century James Lask went north to Orkney at the invitation of Prince Henry St Clair, Earl of Orkney, and settled there, some of the family later moving on to Shetland — giving the clan its strong northern branch.
Both William Leask of that Ilk and his son Alexander fell at the disaster of Flodden in 1513, and the chiefship passed to a younger line. The Leasks suffered, like many, in the ruin of the Darien venture, forced to sell their old estates. In 1672 the Reverend Alexander Leask re-registered the arms, and the Orcadian branch gave the sea captain William Leask, who was said to have rounded Cape Horn more than forty times. The clan has its chief once more, and the motto Virtute Cresco.
