Laurie Family Heritage
The Lauries held lands in Dumfriesshire, and Robert Laurie of Maxwelton was created a baronet in 1685. His daughter, Anna — born at Barjarg Tower in 1682 — became the celebrated Annie Laurie, courted by William Douglas of Fingland, who wrote a poem in her honour. Though the two did not marry, Douglas's verses, later set to music by Alicia Scott, became one of the most cherished of all Scottish songs, sung wherever Scots are found.
Annie Laurie herself married Alexander Fergusson of Craigdarroch and lived a long life, but it is as the fair maid of Maxwelton that she is remembered. The Laurie name, sharing its root with the MacLarens through the name Laurence, spread through the south-west and beyond, and travelled the world with the song that made it famous. An old Dumfriesshire name, Laurie carries a melody wherever it goes.
