About the Lamont Tartan

Clan Lamont is a Highland clan of the Cowal peninsula in Argyll, once one of the most powerful clans of the west, holding almost the whole of Cowal from Loch Fyne to the edge of Dunbartonshire. The name comes from the Old Norse Logmaor, "lawman" or "lawgiver," and tradition traces the clan to Anrothan O'Neill, an Irish prince of the royal house of Ulster. A clan with its own chief, the Lamont of that Ilk, and its own tartan.

Whether you bear the Lamont name, descend from Cowal and Argyll, or simply admire a great clan of the west, this collection brings the Lamont tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Lamont Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Lamont tartan is a handsome sett of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine white lines — closely akin to the tartan of their Campbell neighbours but without the yellow stripe, cool and dignified colours fitting for the old lords of Cowal.

Lamont Clan Heritage

The first firm record of the clan comes in the early 13th century, when Laumanus, from whom the clan takes its name, granted lands at Kilmun and the church of Kilfinan to the monks of Paisley. The early chiefs were styled "The Great MacLamont of all Cowal," and held their seat at Toward Castle, opposite Rothesay Bay. From the 14th century the Lamonts' power was steadily pressed by the rising Campbells, who gained much of their land.

The darkest hour came in 1646, during the wars of Montrose, when the Campbells besieged the Lamont castles of Toward and Ascog and, despite terms of surrender, put many of the clan to death at Dunoon — a tragedy long mourned, and marked today by a memorial cross raised by the clan. The Lamonts never regained their old power, and the chiefs in time settled at Ardlamont and later abroad; the present chief lives in Australia. The crest is an open hand, the motto Ne Parcas Nec Spernas.
