Clan Keith held significant power in northeastern Scotland, particularly in East Lothian and later in Aberdeenshire and Caithness. Originating from a noble Anglo-Norman lineage granted lands by King David I, the Keiths rose to prominence as hereditary Great Marischals of Scotland—a title that entrusted them with the king's safety in battle and ceremonial duties at coronations. Their influence extended through strategic marriages and military service, making them one of the dominant clans during the medieval and early modern periods.

The current chief of Clan Keith is James William Falconer Keith, 14th Earl of Kintore. The historic seat of the clan was Dunnottar Castle, a dramatic fortress perched atop sea cliffs near Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire. Dunnottar played a vital role in Scottish history, including safeguarding the Honours of Scotland during the Cromwellian invasion. Although the castle is now a ruin open to visitors, it remains a powerful symbol of Clan Keith’s bravery, heritage, and unwavering commitment to the Scottish crown.

Dunnottar Castle, perched dramatically on sea cliffs near Stonehaven, served as the historic stronghold of Clan Keith— one of the most powerful and honored families in medieval and early modern Scotland. With roots tracing back to the 12th century, the Keiths rose to prominence through royal favor and military service.
The Keiths were granted the hereditary title of Great Marischal of Scotland, a position that placed them at the center of royal ceremonies and battlefield command. Dunnottar became their principal seat and played a key role in many pivotal events, including the safekeeping of the Honours of Scotland during the English Civil War.
The castle itself dates from the 15th century, though earlier fortifications on the site go back much further. Its clifftop location made it nearly impregnable and visually iconic, a fortress synonymous with Scottish resilience and strategic power.
Although Dunnottar fell into ruin after the Keiths were stripped of their titles following the Jacobite uprisings, it remains a powerful symbol of the clan’s legacy. The ruins are now preserved and open to the public, offering dramatic views and deep historical insight.
