About the Jardine Tartan
Clan Jardine is an old Border clan of Annandale in Dumfriesshire, of Norman origin, whose name comes from the French jardin, "a garden or orchard." The du Jardin family came to Britain with the Norman Conquest, and the name appears in Scotland in charters to Kelso and Arbroath abbeys before 1153. A clan with its own chief, the Jardine of Applegirth, and its own tartan, the Jardines were a hardy riding family of the frontier.

Jardine Clan Heritage
By the 14th century the chiefly line was established at Applegirth on the River Annan, and their stronghold of Spedlins Tower became famous for its grim legend — the ghost of Dunty Porteous, a miller left to starve in its dungeon, said to haunt the tower until the family moved across the river to Jardine Hall. Sir Alexander Jardine defended the Borders against English invaders, routing a force near Carlisle in 1524.
As a Border family the Jardines rode with the best; at a muster in 1541 they turned out more men than the Douglases, Johnstones or Maxwells, and in the great Border feuds they most often stood with the Maxwells. Y-DNA has shown the Jardines share a male-line ancestor with Clan Graham. Dr William Jardine, born in Dumfriesshire, co-founded the great Far Eastern trading house of Jardine Matheson. The crest is a winged spur, ever ready to ride, and the motto Cave Adsum.
