About the Isle of Skye Tartan

The Isle of Skye tartan is a beautiful modern district tartan, created to capture the colours of Skye itself — the "Misty Isle" of the Inner Hebrides. It was instigated and registered in 1992 by Mrs Rosemary Nicolson Samios, an Australian of Skye descent, and designed by the weaver Angus MacLeod of Lewis, chosen through a worldwide competition. As a district tartan of the island rather than a single clan, it may be worn by all who have a bond with Skye.

Whether you were born on Skye, descend from its people, or simply love the Misty Isle, this collection brings the Isle of Skye tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Isle of Skye Tartan Colours

The Isle of Skye tartan weaves together the very colours of the island — the greens of its glens, the browns of its moors, the purple of its heather, the blues of its sea and sky, and the grey of its mist and mountains — a soft, blended palette that captures the ever-changing beauty of the Misty Isle beneath the Cuillin.

The Isle of Skye

Skye is the largest and best-loved of the islands of the Inner Hebrides, a place of soaring mountains, sea-lochs and legend, crowned by the jagged peaks of the Cuillin. Long the home of the great clans of MacLeod and MacDonald, it is woven through with Scottish history and song, from the flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie to the lament of the "Skye Boat Song."

The tartan that bears the island's name is a modern creation, but a heartfelt one: born of the love of a Skye descendant far away in Australia, and woven first in 1993 at Lochcarron Weavers at North Strome, within sight of the Cuillin themselves. Its blended colours, unlike the bold blocks of a clan sett, are meant to melt into one another like the mists of the island, and it has been embraced across Scotland and the world as the tartan of Skye.
