About the Home Tartan

Clan Home — pronounced, and often spelt, Hume — is one of the great clans of the Scottish Borders, which for centuries dominated the eastern Border country of Berwickshire and gave Scotland no fewer than eight Wardens of the Eastern March. The family traces its descent from Cospatric, the Anglo-Celtic Earl of Northumbria, and took its name from the lands of Home in Berwickshire. A clan with its own chief, the Earl of Home, and its own tartan.

Whether you bear the Home or Hume name, descend from Berwickshire or the eastern Borders, or simply admire a great clan of the March, this collection brings the Home tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Home Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Home tartan is a handsome sett of green and dark blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — the green recalling the family's lands of Greenlaw and the arms of Home, with cool, dignified colours fitting for the great house of the eastern Border.

Home Clan Heritage

William of Home acquired the lands of Home in Berwickshire in the early 13th century through his marriage to Ada, daughter of Patrick, Earl of Dunbar; his arms bore the silver lion of Dunbar on a green field, for his lands of Greenlaw. The Homes rose to dominate the eastern Border, holding Hume Castle and providing warden after warden of the March — the king's guardians of the frontier with England.

Alexander Home was created Lord Home in the 15th century, and the chiefs rose to be Earls of Home. Staunch in Scotland's cause, they suffered for it: Cromwell seized Hume Castle in 1650. The family gave Scotland the philosopher Henry Home, Lord Kames, while the philosopher David Hume shared the name in its other spelling, and in the 20th century Sir Alec Douglas-Home, 14th Earl of Home, served as Prime Minister. The seat today is The Hirsel. The motto is True to the End, the slogan A Home! A Home!

Home Tartan FAQ

It is the clan tartan of Clan Home, a green and dark blue sett with black — the green recalling the family's lands of Greenlaw.

Who can wear the Home tartan?

Anyone can wear it. It is especially meaningful for those of the Home or Hume name and for anyone with Berwickshire ancestry.
