Hogg Family Heritage
The name is found in Scotland from early times: around 1240 Turkil Hog is recorded in Berwickshire, and Henry Hogg of Roxburghshire and John Hogg, burgess of Edinburgh, signed the Ragman Roll in 1296. Roger Hog, a burgess of Edinburgh, acquired lands near the city, and in 1373 the family gained Sydserf in East Lothian, holding it for generations. In 1783 Roger Hog of Newliston was recognised as chief of the name.
By far the most famous of the name was James Hogg, the "Ettrick Shepherd," born in Selkirkshire in 1770 — a self-taught poet and novelist, friend of Sir Walter Scott, and author of the remarkable Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. He is buried at Ettrick, and a monument to him overlooks St Mary's Loch. Thomas Hog was a noted Covenanter of the 17th century. The Hoggs of Newliston built a fine mansion by Robert Adam. The motto is Dat Gloria Vires.
