About the Hepburn Tartan
Clan Hepburn is an old Lowland Scottish clan of East Lothian, whose name comes from Hepburn in Northumberland, from the Old English for a "high burial place" or "high place by the water." By tradition the first Hepburn won his East Lothian lands by saving the Earl of March from a runaway horse. From their seat at Hailes Castle the family rose to become Earls of Bothwell, and they have a distinctive tartan of their own.

Hepburn Clan Heritage
Sir Patrick Hepburn was granted the lands of Hailes in the late 14th century, and the family rose swiftly: created Lord Hailes in 1453, and Earl of Bothwell in 1488, when Patrick Hepburn became High Admiral of Scotland and Keeper of Edinburgh Castle. Patrick and his son Adam were among the many Scottish nobles who fell with James IV at the disaster of Flodden in 1513.
The most famous — and infamous — of the name was James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, whose fall brought the main line to ruin; he died in exile in Denmark. In a nobler vein, Sir John Hepburn was one of the great soldiers of the age, serving the King of Sweden and then France, and founding the regiment that became the Royal Scots. The family held Hailes and, for a time, the grim border fortress of Hermitage. The motto is Keep Tryst.
