About the Grierson Tartan
Clan Grierson is a Lowland Scottish clan of Dumfriesshire, whose name — a form of "son of Grier," itself from Gregor — is recorded from about 1408, when the family acquired the lands of Lag. By tradition, though disputed by modern historians, the Griersons of Lag sprang from the same stock as Clan Gregor. A clan with its own chief, the Grierson of Lag, and its own tartan, the Griersons held their Border tower for centuries.

Grierson Clan Heritage
The Griersons acquired the lands of Lag around 1408, and Lag Tower became the seat of the chiefs. Gilbert Grierson was armour-bearer to the Earl of Douglas in 1420, and married Janet, daughter of Sir Simon Glendinning, whose mother was a daughter of the fourth Earl of Douglas — royal connections that secured the family's early fortunes. Roger Grierson fell at Sauchieburn in 1488, and the Lairds of Lag followed James IV to their fate at Flodden in 1513.
Allied with the powerful Maxwells, the Griersons fought the Johnstones at the Battle of Dryfe Sands in 1593. The most notorious of the name was Sir Robert Grierson of Lag, "Auld Lag," a fierce persecutor of the Covenanters, whose dark reputation inspired Sir Walter Scott's novel Redgauntlet. In gentler times the name gave Scotland Sir George Grierson, the great scholar of the languages of India, and John Grierson, the father of the documentary film. The crest is a fetterlock, the motto Hoc Securior.
