About the Falconer Tartan

The Falconer name comes from an ancient and honourable office — that of the falconer, the keeper of the king's hawks. The first of the name in Scotland was Ranulph the Falconer, falconer to William the Lion, who received lands in the Mearns of Kincardineshire that took the name Halkerton, "the hawker's town." An armigerous clan raised to the peerage as Lords Falconer of Halkerton, the Falconers have their own distinctive tartan.

Whether you bear the Falconer name, descend from the Mearns, or simply admire a clan whose very name recalls a noble craft of the medieval court, this collection brings the Falconer tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Falconer Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Falconer tartan is a warm and distinctive sett of gold and brown crossed with green and lined with black — earthy, autumnal colours fitting for the hereditary falconers of the crown, recalling the plumage of the hawk and the fertile fields of the Mearns where the family held its lands.

Falconer Clan Heritage

Ranulph the Falconer, son of Walter, held the office of falconer to William the Lion, and received the lands of Halkerton in the Mearns, close by the royal castle of Kincardine. The family served the crown in this hereditary craft for generations, and rose steadily among the gentry of the north-east, holding the barony of Lumgair and building their stronghold at Halkerton.

Sir Alexander Falconer was made a baronet in 1634 and raised to the peerage as Lord Falconer of Halkerton, moving the family seat to Inglismaldie Castle. A later Lord's sister was mother to the great Enlightenment philosopher David Hume. In 1778 the 7th Lord Falconer inherited the Earldom of Kintore and the chiefship of Clan Keith, taking the name Keith-Falconer, so binding the two families together. The crest is a praying angel, and the motto Vive Ut Vivas.
