Ewing Family Heritage
The Ewings trace their origin to Clan Ewen of Otter, an old Highland clan of the Cowal peninsula in Argyll. When the clan lost its ancestral lands in the late 15th century, its people found refuge on the lands of the Earls of Lennox around Loch Lomond, where the name "Ewing" first appears by the 1560s. William Ewing was summoned to the court of Mary, Queen of Scots, and by tradition carried one of her banners at the Battle of Langside in 1568, for which he was granted arms.
Findlay Ewing was settled on the estate of Ladytoun near Bonhill, and in the 19th century the Ewings of Balloch built a great textile empire in the Vale of Leven, Archibald Orr Ewing being made a baronet in 1886. Many Ewings, staunch Presbyterians, went to Ulster and then to America, where six brothers of the name became famed in family tradition. In modern times Winnie Ewing, "Madame Écosse," carried the name proudly in Scottish public life.
