About the Durie Tartan
Clan Durie is an old Lowland family of Fife, taking its name from the lands of Durie in the parish of Scoonie near Leven, a Gaelic place-name thought to mean "black stream" — perhaps for the rich coal seams of Fife. Around 1260 Gilbert, a younger son of the Earl of Strathearn, was granted these lands and took the name. A clan with its own chief, Durie of Durie, the Duries have their own distinctive tartan.

Durie Clan Heritage
Duncan de Dury witnessed for Malise, Earl of Strathearn, around 1258, and the family's prominence in Fife runs through the charters of the 13th and 14th centuries. The Duries rose highest in the 1500s: George Durie became Commendator and the last Abbot of Dunfermline before the Reformation, and at the fall of the old church he carried the precious reliquary holding the head of St Margaret safely to France. His brother Andrew was Abbot of Melrose and Bishop of Galloway.
The Duries held Rossend Castle at Burntisland, where Mary, Queen of Scots, lodged in 1563, as well as the lands of Durie in Scoonie, raised to a barony in 1509. After the estate was sold in 1614, the chiefly line continued through the branch of Craigluscar near Dunfermline. The chiefship was confirmed in 1988 in Durie of Durie. The crest is a crescent, and the motto Confido, "I trust."
