About the Duncan Tartan

Duncan is one of the oldest names in Scotland, from the Gaelic Donnchadh, "brown warrior." Clan Duncan shares its ancient origins with Clan Donnachaidh, the Robertsons, both springing from the old Celtic Earls of Atholl and from Stout Duncan, who fought for the Bruce. In time the Duncans took their own path in the east of Scotland, chief among them the Duncans of Lundie in Forfarshire, and they have their own distinctive tartan.

Whether you bear the Duncan name, descend from Forfarshire or Perthshire, or simply admire a clan of ancient roots and naval glory, this collection brings the Duncan tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Duncan Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Duncan tartan is a handsome sett of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by bold lines of red — rich, dignified colours closely related to the Robertson pattern, reflecting the clan's ancient kinship with the Children of Duncan, yet worn proudly as the Duncans' own.

Duncan Clan Heritage

The clan's name comes from Donnchadh Reamhar, "Stout Duncan," who led his kin for Robert the Bruce in the Wars of Independence; from his great-grandson Robert sprang the Robertsons, while others kept the name Duncan. The predominant family were the Duncans of Lundie in Forfarshire, whose lands took in the barony of Lundie and the estate of Gourdie, in the fertile country north of the Tay.

The clan's greatest son was Admiral Adam Duncan of Lundie, who as commander of the North Sea Fleet won the great victory of Camperdown over the Dutch in 1797, and was created Viscount Duncan of Camperdown; his son was made Earl of Camperdown. Sir William Duncan served as physician to King George III. The crest is a ship under full sail, fitting for a clan of such naval fame, and the motto is Disce Pati, "learn to endure."
