About the Donnachaidh Tartan
Clan Donnachaidh — the "Children of Duncan," better known in English as Clan Robertson — is one of the oldest clans in Scotland, descended from the ancient royal house of Atholl. Almost alone among the clans, it still goes by its Gaelic name. Its territory lay in highland Perthshire, around Struan, Rannoch and Loch Tummel. A clan with its own chief, Robertson of Struan, the Donnachaidh have a rich array of their own tartans.

Donnachaidh Clan Heritage
The clan's first chief was Donnchadh Reamhar, "Stout Duncan," who sheltered Robert the Bruce after his defeat at Methven in 1306 and led the clan at Bannockburn in 1314. On the march to that battle, the clan's sacred crystal talisman, the Clach na Brataich or "Stone of the Standard," was found beneath the chief's standard, and has been carried by the chiefs ever since — it survives to this day in the Clan Donnachaidh Museum at Bruar.
In 1437 the fourth chief, Robert Riabhach Duncanson, captured the murderers of King James I, and for this service his lands were erected into the barony of Struan and the family took the name Robertson, "Robert's son." The chiefs were granted the rare honour of a crest showing a hand raising the royal crown, with a chained captive beneath the shield. Staunch Jacobites, the clan followed the Poet Chief, Alexander Robertson of Struan, through all three risings. The motto is Virtutis Gloria Merces.
