Donachie Family Heritage
The name preserves, in its many forms, the Gaelic patronymic of the clan — mac Dhonnchaidh, "son of Duncan" — taken from Donnchadh Reamhar, "Stout Duncan," the first chief, who led the clan for Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314. While the senior line came to be called Robertson, many clansfolk kept forms closer to the old Gaelic, among them Donachie, Dunnachie and MacConachie, carrying the sound of the clan's true name down the centuries.
Through all its spellings, the name belonged to one of the oldest clans in Scotland, descended from the ancient royal house of Atholl. Members of the clan, by whatever form of the name, shared in its loyalty to the Bruce and the Stuart kings, in the Jacobite risings, and in the great migrations that carried the children of Duncan from the glens of Atholl across the seas to every corner of the world.
