Clan Davidson is one of the principal families of the historic Chattan Confederation, with origins tracing back to the 14th century. The name derives from “MacDhàibhidh,” meaning “son of David.” The Davidsons were early allies of the Mackintoshes but developed their own distinct identity within the Highland clans.
The current chief is Grant Guthrie Davidson, 3rd of Davidston, who resides in New Zealand. He was officially recognized as Chief of the Name and Arms of Davidson by the Lord Lyon King of Arms in 2015. His leadership symbolizes the global reach of the clan and its continuing legacy among the Scottish diaspora.

Tulloch Castle, located in the town of Dingwall in Ross-shire, is most closely associated with Clan Bayne but later became linked to Clan Davidson through marriage. Though not originally a Davidson stronghold, the castle became part of the extended clan heritage and has since been embraced as a symbol of Davidson history.
The earliest parts of Tulloch Castle date back to the 12th century, though much of the current structure was developed in the 16th century and later. When the Davidsons came into possession of the castle through familial ties, it became a seat of influence for the clan during a period of more peaceful integration in the Highlands.
Tulloch Castle today operates as a hotel and heritage site. It retains many historical features, including its original tower and Great Hall, and is often visited by members of the Davidson clan and those interested in Highland history.
While Clan Davidson’s ancestral roots are often tied to Badenoch and their early involvement in the Chattan Confederation, Tulloch Castle offers a lasting architectural presence that celebrates the clan’s enduring legacy.
