About the Davidson Tartan
Clan Davidson is a Highland clan and a proud member of the Chattan Confederation. Known in Gaelic as MacDhai, "son of David," the clan is descended from David Dubh of Badenoch, and by tradition from the line of the Comyns — for after the Comyn name was proscribed in 1320, David and his followers became known as the Clan Dhai. A clan with its own chief, seated of old at Tulloch Castle, the Davidsons have their own distinctive tartan.

Davidson Clan Heritage
The first chief, David, married a daughter of the chief of Clan Mackintosh, head of the Chattan Confederation, binding the Davidsons into that great alliance. Their early history was marked by tragedy: at the Battle of Invernahavon around 1370, a dispute with the Macphersons over who should command the right wing led the Macphersons to withdraw, and the Camerons fell upon the Davidsons and all but destroyed them. Yet the clan rebuilt its strength with remarkable resilience.
In 1411 Robert Davidson, Provost of Aberdeen, fell leading the city's burgesses at the Battle of Harlaw. The chiefly line came to rest at Tulloch Castle near Dingwall, acquired in 1762, and the Davidsons of Tulloch led the clan thereafter. Many Davidsons followed the Jacobite cause and, after Culloden, were transported to the Carolinas, where their settlements earned the name "Hornet's Nest." The crest is a stag's head, the badge the red whortleberry, and the motto Sapienter Si Sincere.
