The Dalrymple name is a territorial one of the Scottish Lowlands, taken from the lands of Dalrymple in Kyle in Ayrshire, from the Gaelic for "field of the crooked pool." Thomas de Dalrympylle set his name to the Ragman Roll in 1296, and from these Ayrshire roots the family rose to be one of the most distinguished of Lowland houses, the Dalrymples of Stair. A Lowland armigerous family ennobled as the Earls of Stair, the Dalrymples have their own distinctive tartan.

Dalrymple Clan Heritage
The family's fortunes were founded when William de Dalrymple married Agnes Kennedy around 1540 and acquired the lands of Stair-Montgomery, becoming the first Dalrymple of Stair. From this line came Sir James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount Stair (1619–1695), one of the greatest legal minds in Scottish history, Lord President of the Court of Session and author of The Institutions of the Law of Scotland, a foundation stone of Scots law to this day.
His descendants rose to high office as the Earls of Stair, seated at Lochinch and Castle Kennedy, and as the Earls of Dumfries at Dumfries House. The family's story has its shadows too, from the part played by the 1st Earl in the affairs of state, to the tragic tale of Janet Dalrymple, said to have inspired Sir Walter Scott's Bride of Lammermoor. The crest is a rock, and the motto, fittingly for such a steadfast house, is simply Firm.
