About the Crichton Tartan
Clan Crichton is a Lowland Scottish clan whose name comes from the lands of Kreitton, an old barony near Edinburgh, where Crichton Castle still stands. The name appears as early as 1128, when Thurstan de Crechtune witnessed the foundation of Holyrood Abbey. A clan with its own chief, David Crichton of that Ilk, seated at Monzie Castle near Crieff, the Crichtons have their own tartan, designed in 2009 for the great Clan Gathering in Edinburgh.

Crichton Clan Heritage
The Crichtons rose to the height of power under Sir William Crichton, Chancellor of Scotland during the minority of James II, who as keeper of Edinburgh Castle staged the notorious "Black Dinner" of 1439, at which the young Earl of Douglas and his brother were seized and put to death — an act that sparked a long feud with the mighty House of Douglas. Sir William was nonetheless raised to the peerage as Lord Crichton.
Branches of the clan spread far: the Crichtons of Sanquhar became Lords Crichton of Sanquhar and, in time, the line of the Marquesses of Bute, while the Crichtons of Frendraught held lands in Banffshire. The most celebrated of the name was James Crichton (1560–1582), the "Admirable Crichton," a prodigy who mastered ten languages and every art and science of his age before his death at twenty-two. The crest is a fire-spouting dragon, the motto God Send Grace.
