Cooper Family Heritage
The name appears in Scottish record from early times: Selomone de Coupir witnessed a charter in 1245, John Cupar held lands in Aberdeen in the late 13th century, and Symon Coupare of Berwickshire rendered homage in 1296. Thomas de Cupro was a Canon of St Andrews in 1406. The name was especially common in the north-east, around Aberdeenshire, and in Fife, where the burgh of Cupar gave it a second source.
In the 17th century a family of Coupers held the lands of Gogar near Edinburgh, where John Couper built the fine Castle Gogar in 1625 and was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1638 — only to be killed in the explosion that destroyed Douglas Castle in 1640, during the Covenanting Bishops' Wars. The crest is an arm holding a battle-axe, and the motto Resurgo means "I rise again."
