About the Clelland Tartan
The Clelland name — also spelled Cleland and Kneland — is a Lowland Scottish one, taken from the lands of Cleland in the parish of Dalziel, Lanarkshire. An old armigerous family long without a chief, the Clellands were traditionally foresters to the powerful House of Douglas. Their tartan, created in 1989 for the Clan Clelland Society, is based on the Douglas tartan in recognition of that ancient service.

Clelland Family Heritage
The first of the name on record is Alexander Kneland of that Ilk, in the 13th century, who married Margaret, a sister of the patriot Sir William Wallace. His son James became one of Wallace's closest companions, fighting beside him at Stirling Bridge and Falkirk; wounded for Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn, he was rewarded with the Calder lands. As the old rhyme of Blind Harry recalled, "Kneland was there, near kinsman to Wallace."
For centuries the Clellands fought for Scotland: Alexander Cleland and his cousin William fell with James IV at Flodden in 1513. Lieutenant Colonel William Cleland, the Covenanter poet, commanded the Cameronian Regiment and was killed at the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689; his son John Cleland became a noted, if notorious, author. The crest is a falcon perched on a glove, and the motto Non Sibi — "not for himself" — speaks of a family who served causes greater than their own.
