The name appears in record from the mid-14th century, when William de Carnys witnessed a charter in 1349. In 1363 William and his son Duncan held the baronies of Easter and Wester Whitburn from David II, and by 1372 William de Carnys was constable first of Linlithgow and then of Edinburgh Castle. The family spread through the Lothians as landholders, clerics and notaries, and a branch under Alexander de Carnys carried the name into Galloway in the early 15th century.
The name endured and rose: Hugh McCalmont Cairns, born of an Ulster-Scots family, became 1st Earl Cairns and Lord Chancellor of Great Britain in the 19th century, one of the foremost lawyers of his age — a fitting honour for a family long associated with law and service. The arms of Cairns bear golden martlets on red, and the motto Fortis et Fidelis means "strong and faithful."
