Butter Family Heritage
The Butters held Faskally near Pitlochry from early times, and the Butters of Gormack were a still older branch in the same county. The name appears in record from 1331, with the escheat of Adam Butir, and in 1360 William and Patrick Butirr served as collectors of contributions in Gowrie. The family had a bold and warlike streak: in 1554 John Butter of Gormack was outlawed for his part in a deadly feud with the Blairs of Balthayock, and in 1598 Patrick Butter was indicted for besieging the House of Ashintully.
In time the Butters turned their martial spirit to honourable service in arms. Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Butter of Faskally served in the Crimea and survived the Indian Mutiny in the 1850s. In the 20th century Major Sir David Butter of Pitlochry served in the Scots Guards, won the Military Cross, and was for many years Lord Lieutenant of Perthshire and chieftain of the Pitlochry Highland Games. The crest is two hands drawing a bow, the motto Dirget Deus, "God directs."
