Bannerman Clan Heritage
Tradition holds that the office of banner-bearer was won when Sir Alexander Carron rode after his king — in the reign of Malcolm III or Alexander I — as the monarch plunged into the raging River Spey to meet a rebel army, the loyal standard held high. The family was granted lands in Aberdeenshire, and in 1367 David II confirmed Donald Bannerman in the lands of Clyntrees, Waterton and Welltown, on condition a chapel be kept for the soul of Robert the Bruce.
Created Baronets of Nova Scotia by Charles II in 1682, the Bannermans of Elsick were staunch Jacobites: Sir Patrick was knighted by the Old Pretender in 1715, and Sir Alexander led 160 clansmen for Prince Charles in 1745, escaping after Culloden by hiding in a secret closet at Elsick. The crest, an armoured knight with a sword, and the motto Pro Patria — "for my country" — suit a clan that also gave Britain Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman.
