About the Bannatyne Tartan
The Bannatyne name has two old roots: the Bannatynes of Kames on the Isle of Bute, who held Kames Castle from the 14th century, and the Bannatynes of Corhouse, or Corra, in Lanarkshire. The two branches are best treated as separate families, their link now unclear. The Bute Bannatynes, long keepers of Rothesay Castle for the Stewarts, are recognised as a sept of Clan Campbell, and so members traditionally wear the Campbell tartan.

Bannatyne Family Heritage
The Bannatynes of Kames held their island lands from early in the 14th century, and John Bannatyne was laird and keeper of Rothesay Castle for the Stewarts in 1334. For generations they ranked among the great landowners of Bute alongside the Stuarts and the Spens of Wester Kames, and Hector Bannatyne of Kames signed the National Covenant in 1638 on behalf of the island. The Lanarkshire Bannatynes, meanwhile, held Corra Castle above the Clyde.
The name gave Scotland the antiquary George Bannatyne (1545–1608), whose great manuscript collection of older Scots poetry preserved much of the nation's early verse and inspired the later Bannatyne Club. Lord Bannatyne, an 18th-century judge, took his title from the family's Bute estates. As a sept of Clan Campbell, the Bute Bannatynes share that clan's tartan and proud history.
