How it all started
Territories
Clan Armstrong was one of the most powerful Border Reiver families, centered in Liddesdale in the Scottish Borders. They gained influence during the 14th and 15th centuries, known for their riding, raiding, and martial prowess. Their strength once rivaled the Scottish Crown, leading to crackdowns on the clan’s power. Despite loss of territory, the Armstrong name endures as a symbol of Border tenacity and independence.
Clan Chief
Clan Armstrong is armigerous and has no recognized chief. The crest shows a strong arm in armor holding a sword, and the motto “Invictus maneo” (I remain unvanquished) represents their undying spirit. Armstrongs worldwide continue to celebrate their unique Border heritage.
Armstrong Territories
Location: Liddesdale and the Scottish Borders
Clan Armstrong held lands in Liddesdale and the Scottish Borders, an area marked by its strategic location and historical significance. Their influence was closely tied to control of local routes, agricultural strength, or alliances with neighboring clans.
Though not all branches maintained grand castles, the family presence shaped the development of surrounding territories. In many cases, remnants of towers, fortified houses, or clan seats still echo their legacy today.
The heritage of Clan Armstrong remains deeply rooted in this landscape — not solely through buildings, but through centuries of tradition, leadership, and local prominence.
