Clan Lindsay is a distinguished Lowland Scottish clan of Anglo-Norman origin, with the name deriving from lands in Lincolnshire, England. The family came to Scotland during the reign of David I in the 12th century and quickly rose in power and influence. The Lindsays were granted large estates in Lanarkshire, Fife, and Angus, and became one of the most prominent noble families in medieval Scotland. Their principal seat was Edzell Castle in Angus, and they were later elevated to Earls of Crawford, a title that brought the clan considerable prestige.
