About the Guthrie Tartan

Clan Guthrie is an old Scottish clan of Angus, whose name — one of the oldest in that county — comes from the lands of Guthrie near Forfar, thought to derive from the Gaelic gaothair, "a windy place." The early Guthries were royal falconers, and rose to hold the barony of Guthrie and build Guthrie Castle. A clan with its own chief, the Guthrie of Guthrie, and its own tartan, the clan's motto is Sto Pro Veritate.

Whether you bear the Guthrie name, descend from Angus, or simply admire an old clan of the east, this collection brings the Guthrie tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Guthrie Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Guthrie tartan is a handsome sett of deep blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — cool, dignified colours that recall the windswept braes and fertile fields of Angus, the ancient homeland of the clan near the town of Forfar.

Guthrie Clan Heritage

In about 1178 William the Lion granted the lands of Gutherin to Arbroath Abbey, and the Guthries, who were royal falconers, later acquired them. The earliest sure record of the name comes in 1299, when the Laird of Guthrie was sent to France to invite Sir William Wallace to return to Scotland; the mission succeeded, and Guthrie landed with Wallace at Montrose. The family obtained the Barony of Guthrie from David II.

Sir David Guthrie rose to be Lord Treasurer and then Lord Chief Justice of Scotland, and in 1468 built Guthrie Castle near Forfar, raising a Collegiate Church beside it. His son Sir Alexander fell at Flodden in 1513. A branch, the Guthries of Halkerton, held their lands by the office of royal falconer. The clan gave Scotland notable churchmen, including the Covenanter James Guthrie and the great philanthropist Thomas Guthrie. The crest is an arm holding a sword, the motto Sto Pro Veritate.
