About the Gray Tartan
Clan Gray is an old Lowland Scottish clan of Perthshire and Angus. The name is of Norman origin, from Fulbert, chamberlain to the Duke of Normandy, who held the lands of Gray in Picardy; his descendants came north through England and settled in the Borders and then Angus. A clan with its own chief, the Lord Gray, and its own tartan, the Grays bear the anchor as their crest and the fitting motto Anchor Fast Anchor.

Gray Clan Heritage
The Greys of Broxmouth in the Borders changed their name to the Scottish de Gray, and Sir Andrew de Gray supported Robert the Bruce in the Wars of Independence, joining Sir James Douglas and Sir Alexander Fraser in 1307 in the cause of Scottish freedom. For his service he was granted the lands of Longforgan in the Carse of Gowrie, and the family rose to be hereditary Sheriffs of Angus.
Sir Andrew Gray was created Lord Gray in the 15th century, and the family built the Rock of Broughty into a castle guarding the mouth of the Tay, as well as Castle Huntly at Longforgan. One of their number, Robert Gray, fell with the young King James IV's men at Flodden in 1513. The clan is also linked to the Highland MacGlashans, from the Gaelic glas, "grey." The crest is an anchor, the symbol of hope, and the motto Anchor Fast Anchor.
