Glen Family Heritage
Sarra de Glen, in common with much of the Scottish nobility, swore allegiance to Edward I of England in 1296. The family soon proved its loyalty to the Scottish cause: Colban del Glen was left a legacy by Queen Elizabeth, wife of Robert the Bruce, and in 1328 the King granted him the lands of Quilte in the sheriffdom of Peebles. The present Glen House stands on the site of his original castle in the valley of the Tweed.
In 1422 Thomas de Glen was granted a safe conduct to travel in England, and the family kept its place among the gentry of the Borders through the centuries. Being a name drawn from the land itself, the Glens spread widely; in more recent times a descendant of the name, John Glenn, aimed at high things indeed, orbiting the Earth aboard Friendship 7 and serving long as a United States Senator. The motto of the name is Alta Pete.
