About the Dewar Tartan
Clan Dewar takes its name from the Gaelic deòradh, meaning a pilgrim — and, in time, the hereditary keeper or custodian of a saint's holy relics. The most famous Dewars were the guardians of the relics of St Fillan, the 8th-century Irish missionary of the central Highlands, and the name itself was a sacred office before it was a surname. An old clan of Perthshire and Glendochart, the Dewars have their own distinctive tartan.

Dewar Clan Heritage
The Dewars were the hereditary keepers of the five great relics of St Fillan — chief among them the Quigrich, the saint's silver-gilt crozier. Possession of a relic carried both land and legal power: the Dewar of the Quigrich had the right to cross all Scotland to recover stolen goods. On the eve of Bannockburn in 1314, Robert the Bruce had St Fillan's relics brought before the army to bless the Scots, and the royal favour shown to the Dewars endured long after.
Thomas and Piers de Deware set their names to the Ragman Roll in 1296, and in 1474 William Dewar received a charter of the lands of Dewar. The chiefly line, the Dewars of that Ilk, prospered as merchants and bought the barony of Vogrie in 1719. The last hereditary keeper carried the Quigrich to Canada, whence it was returned to Scotland in 1876, and it now rests in the National Museum. The name lives on in John Dewar the whisky maker and in Donald Dewar, first First Minister of Scotland.
