Family Name Connolly (Ó Conghalaigh)
Region Connacht & Monaghan
Origin Conghal — Fierce as a Hound
Tartan Worn Irish National Tartan

About the Connolly Tartan

The Connolly name is one of Ireland's great old names, not Scottish, from the Gaelic Ó Conghalaigh — descendant of Conghal, a name meaning "fierce as a hound" or "valorous." Several distinct septs bore the name across Gaelic Ireland, in Connacht, Monaghan, Fermanagh and West Cork. As an Irish family rather than a Scottish clan, Connolly is most fittingly worn with the Irish National tartan.

This collection celebrates the Connolly name in all its spellings — Connelly, Connally and more — and its proud Irish heritage, bringing a fitting Irish tartan into apparel, accessories, home decor and heritage gifts for those who carry one of Ireland's most storied names.

Connolly & Irish National Tartan Colours

Worn through the Irish National tartan, the collection draws on a rich green-based palette lifted by gold and a fine line of cream — the green of the Irish countryside, fitting for a name that carries the fierce, valorous spirit of Gaelic Ireland.

Connolly Family Heritage

The most prominent of the Connollys were those of Monaghan, recognised as "Chiefs of the Name" and counted among the Four Tribes of Tara, alongside the O'Hares, O'Regans and O'Kellys. A branch of the southern Uí Néill, they traced descent from the legendary High King Niall of the Nine Hostages. Driven from their Meath homeland by the Norman invasion, they settled in Monaghan, and were at the forefront of the native Irish rising of 1641.

The name has given Ireland figures of every kind: William Conolly, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons in the early 1700s and reputedly the richest man in Ireland, who built the magnificent Castletown House; and James Connolly (1868–1916), born of Irish parents in Edinburgh, the socialist leader and founder of Irish labour, executed for his part in the Easter Rising. Whatever its branch, the Connolly name carries its old meaning — fierce, valorous and enduring.
