The name is rooted in the cult of Saint Blane, the Bute-born missionary bishop who founded the church at Kingarth and gave his name to Dunblane. The first "follower of Blane" would have been a churchman of one of the saint's religious houses. The surname is found from early times in the south-west: Patrick Blane was provost of the burgh of Wigtown in 1561, and the name spread through Ayrshire, Wigtownshire and Galloway as a settled family of merchants and lairds.
The name's most distinguished son was Sir Gilbert Blane of Blanefield, the great naval physician, who as a reformer in the Royal Navy championed the use of lemon and lime juice against scurvy — saving countless sailors' lives — and became physician to the Prince Regent, later George IV. The Blanes gave long service to the army and navy through the 19th century, the last baronet, Sir Charles Blane, falling at the Battle of Jutland in 1916.
