How it all started

Territories

Clan Farquharson is a prominent Highland clan rooted in the ancient lands of Aberdeenshire, particularly around Braemar and the Dee Valley. The clan descends from Farquhar, fourth son of Alexander Ciar of Rothiemurchus, a branch of the Clan Shaw. Over time, they became a dominant force in Upper Deeside and one of the principal clans of the powerful Clan Chattan Confederation. Their seat was at Invercauld House, and they were known for their fierce loyalty to the Stuart cause, particularly during the Jacobite Risings. The Farquharsons earned a fearsome reputation for courage and military leadership, with several members playing key roles in Scottish history.

Clan Chief

The current Chief of Clan Farquharson is Captain Alwyne Arthur Compton Farquharson of Invercauld, recognized by the Lord Lyon. Though now living abroad, he remains symbolic of the clan’s enduring heritage and Highland legacy. The clan crest—a lion rampant issuing from a wreath—and the motto “Fide et Fortitudine” (By faith and fortitude) represent their values of strength and loyalty. Today, Clan Farquharson societies worldwide continue to honor their ancestry through cultural gatherings, Highland Games, and genealogical preservation.
