Edmonstone Clan Heritage
Henry de Edmundiston appears in record around 1210, styled "son of E." for the family's ancestor Edmund. The Edmonstones held lands near Edinburgh and in Berwickshire, and John Edmonstone served King David II on diplomatic missions to England, gaining the thanage of Boyne in 1369. The family's great rise came with Sir William Edmonstone, 1st of Duntreath, styled "of Culloden," who in 1425 married Princess Mary, sister of King James I and widow of the Earl of Angus.
For this royal match Sir William was granted the barony of Duntreath, held directly of the crown, and Duntreath Castle in the Blane Valley became the clan's ancestral seat. William, 4th of Duntreath, fell beside James IV at Flodden in 1513. In the 17th century the family took part in the plantation of Ulster, settling in Antrim, before returning to restore Duntreath in the 19th century. The crest is a swan's head, the motto Virtus Auget Honorem.
